Harry Oliver Lent, former Star Island manager

DOVER, N.H. – Harry Oliver Lent died peacefully Nov. 4, 2010, at his home, after a series of debilitating strokes. He was born Jan. 10, 1925, in Patten, to Edward Lent Sr. and Marie Olive (Violette) Lent. He attended Patten Academy and joined the U.S. Navy to fight in World War II. He did his three years of duty in the South Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier, SS Boxer, as an aviation fire controlman. After the war he attended the University of Maine, Orono, on the GI Bill, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Education degree. He met and married Rachel Annis of West Rockport, to whom he was married 55 years, until her death in late-2003. He became a physics teacher, was the principal of Monson Academy for several years in the early 1950s, then moved to Newtonville, Mass., where his family lived for 20 years. During this time, he taught first at Newton North High School for several years, then Brookline (Mass.) High School, and was also administrator of the adult education programs for Brookline, Mass., until retirement. During summers, from 1961 until his retirement in 1980, Harry served as manager of Star Island Conference Center, off Portsmouth, N.H. Harry and Rachel moved back to West Rockport in 1980 upon his retirement from Brookline, Mass., public schools. He was an active member of the Simonton’s Corner community, West Rockport, and a 50-plus year Mason. In December 2004, he was blessed to marry Eleanor Sargent, with whom he had attended Patten Academy, and who has stood by him unfailingly throughout the deterioration of his health. He could not have had a more caring and loving partner at the end. He is survived by his wife of six years, Eleanor; children, Gary of Cheshire, Ore., Stephanie of Middleton, Wis., Diann of West Rockport and Kenneth and Linda of Rockland; three grandchildren, Hope of Middleton, Wis., Julia and James of Rockland; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Muriel Lent of Milford, N.H.; sister-in-law, Betty Lent of East Millinocket and Shin Pond; many other cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rachel; brother, Edward Jr. and his wife, Maureen; brother, John; and his grandson, Samuel Clay. Friends and family are invited to a brief service 2 p.m. Nov. 20 at Maple Suites Retirement Community, Dover, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations in Harry’s name may be made to the Lumberman’s Museum, Patten, ME 04765, which Harry was a great supporter. Harry’s ashes will be placed in the Lent plot at Shin Pond in the summer.
